The Differences Between Pillow Shams and Pillowcases

!±8± The Differences Between Pillow Shams and Pillowcases

Many questions come up regarding the different types of bedding available in the market today. One of the most frequent questions that young moms or dads often ask is "what is the difference between pillowcases and pillow shams?" I would like to clarify the difference for you.

A Pillowcase: Pillowcases are just that. It is a case to cover your pillow in. Its main purpose is to cover the pillow you use for sleeping. A pillowcase is open on one end in order to easily slip a pillow into. Sometimes it is referred to as a pillow slip. A pillowcase protects the pillow on which you lay your head to relax, or fall asleep. In addition to protecting your pillow the pillowcase helps absorb face oils, perspiration, drool, and softly protects your face as you sleep.

Pillowcases are usually purchased at the same time as your bed sheets. Most people tend to want matching bed sheets and pillowcases. Sometimes, you will find beautiful hand embroidered pillowcases. These pillowcases are generally white to show off the beautiful embroidered handiwork, and are often given as gifts. You may also see some pillowcases with a beautiful crocheted edging. These hand embroidered and crocheted pillowcases are made with a lot of love to make a special gift.

Oftentimes a hand embroidered monogram pillowcase is given as a wedding gift. Pillowcases, if decorated, are done on the open edge only and not where you lay your face. Pillowcases are made of soft materials that feel nice against your face to facilitate going to sleep quickly. Pillowcases are functional in nature more so than looking pretty, although you will find some very pretty, pillowcases.

A Pillow sham: Is normally used for decorative purposes. A pillow sham is an attractive cover for pillows. You will find that there is a slit in the back where you can insert a pillow. The opening of a pillow sham is located in the middle of the back and it may either be an overlapping of material or it may have a zippered opening. Both openings serve the same purpose of inserting the pillow. They are a great way to use an old pillow that you no longer want to use.

Pillow shams are not normally used to sleep on, or lay your face on. They are usually made of a heavier weight material that matches your comforter, quilt, duvet or bedspread, and are generally made of more expensive material. Some have more decorative materials that may be rough on your skin if you were to lay on it for a long period of time. A pillow that is covered with a pillow sham is removed nightly along with any throw pillows before going down for a good night's sleep. Pillow shams can also be purchased individually to coordinate with your bedding. Sometimes you will find them conveniently included in a bed in a bag set.

Pillow shams are an impressive addition to any bedroom decor. They can add some real style to a worn out pillow and make it appear new. Pillow shams are a welcome addition to any bedroom, whether you are decorating your own bedroom or your kid's bedroom.

As you can see there is a difference between a pillowcase and a pillow sham. The most important difference being, the pillowcase is functional and the pillow sham is a decorative item to be place on top of the bed. You lay down to sleep on the pillow with the pillowcase, and you lay aside the pillow that has the pillow sham. Generally in the morning when making the bed the pillows with the shams are placed on top of the pillows with the cases.

Hopefully this will clear up any questions you may have regarding pillowcases and pillow shams.

Comforters - High Fashion and Functionality

!±8± Comforters - High Fashion and Functionality

The fashion industry has entered into bedding design with great enthusiasm and each year they still manage to come up with something new and fresh to surprise us with their sheer ingenuity. When I was a child, sheets were either candy striped or plain white and all comforters were red, green or blue quilted satin. I remember one time I had a sheet on my bed that was so worn that it had a little hole in it, so of course I had to put my toe in it and pull until there was a very satisfying ripping sound and the sheet's long life came to an end!

My mother laughed and had to admit that it was time to get me some new bedding. That would never happen now and fashion dictates when we refurbish our bedrooms. I can't say I'm sorry about that because I think it's one of the little pleasures of life to have the lovely colors and designs that you can buy today and I find that every time I make over my bedroom I feel refreshed and re-energized. Comforters are a way to proclaim your personality, celebrate your hobbies, display your good taste and be a fashion trend-setter.

If you are a lover of beach life there are many different beach print comforters to bring the colors of the ocean right into your bedroom. You can buy comforters with scenes of undersea marine life, surfing themes and every type of shell pattern. Tommy Bahama has a wide range of beach print designs to fill our desire for a sun, sea and sand atmosphere in the bedroom. If you enjoy sailing why not choose a king size comforter which has all the colorful nautical message flags as its pattern?

If you are a lover of luxury in the bedroom the designers like Tommy Hilfiger and Ralph Lauren have bedding that will cocoon you in the softest quality of cotton and keep you in the very forefront of contemporary fashion design. My favorites for this season are the All American Hilfiger collection which has rich deep blues and clear reds and his Blue Jean Denim luxury comforter sets are selling well. The Ralph Lauren Poet's Society range has a gorgeous rich purple and deep pink paisley comforter design which I absolutely love.

You can buy your comforters and bedspreads separately or save money by buying coordinating comforter sets from names such as Martha Stewart. Her latest collection includes comforter ensembles in Ikebana which have a Japanese inspiration based on the art of flower arranging. The soft peach, white and green shades produce a feeling of serenity and would look very appealing in a light and airy bedroom.

There are plenty of places online where you can buy good quality discount comforter sets by named brands. These stores don't have such high overheads as your local stores and can take advantage of bulk buying to offer you the best possible prices for your bedding.

If you're one of the many people who's crazy about the color lilac, you'll love the retro Hollywood glamour of the Vintage Purple Satin queen comforter set. If you're a real extrovert you can buy a lilac comforter queen set in a purple and black Zebra print! Or if you're a 'wild thing' you can decorate your sofa bed with a daybed comforter set in a Leopard or Giraffe gold and brown print from the Serengeti range.

For people who suffer from allergies and asthma the good news is that all ranges use some form of acrylic or polyester filling in their down alternative comforters, which now easily outsell comforters filled with feather down.

And if you've recently upgraded to a bigger bed and had to ditch your king-size comforters, you'll find that all of the designer brands and the discount stores have plenty of choice in California King comforters and bedspreads, including the very popular comforter bed in a bag sets.

Whatever your taste you can use your choice of Comfortes comforter to express your creativity and stamp your own personality on your home!

15 Ways to Revitalize Boring Windows

!±8± 15 Ways to Revitalize Boring Windows

Are you tired of those same old boring windows? Then start the summer off with something fresh, like a new energy efficient window or an exciting modern window treatment. With a little preparation and planning, you can be saving money on your energy bill and create a new look to any room in the house. Here are a few ideas to get you jump started on your home's wonderful new window treatments.

Old single pane glass windows should be jettisoned for modern vinyl or glass windows. You'll save on energy costs and get a start on transforming the room. Classic looking valances are straightforward and elegant. These window treatments are popular in lofts, bedrooms, and guest rooms. They are made to coordinate with a matching bedspread or daybed cover. Antique or pure white drapes are also very popular window coverings. They are designed to be draped over an open window, occasionally catching the breeze. A very stylish window treatment and practical too, since they're made of washable cotton. Wood blinds are classic window treatments. The blinds are functional and will enrich any room. Great for living rooms, studies, and bedrooms. You can find them in cherry, oak, ash, or mahogany. Metal blinds have had a reputation of being cheap or unsuitable for home décor. But modern aluminum mini blinds are durable, attractive, and won't fade through exposure to sunlight. Verticals blinds are great to shield from sunlight coming through a sliding glass door. They complement honeycomb blinds and are available in faux wood or textured fabric. Honeycomb sun shades are made of durable polyester fabric. It's the finishing touch to most home window treatments. The cellular fabric design repels dust and dirt. Honeycomb shades are also energy efficient. This shade provides great privacy but still allows the homeowner to regulate sunlight into the home. Roman shades come in many different styles. From premium silk to modern energy efficient fusion shades. They dress your room up much like draperies, but these shades are uniquely effective at blocking sunlight. Bamboo shades are made from woven natural grasses and reeds. These blinds are custom fit and they add a distinct style to the room. Popular in living rooms, laundry areas, kids' rooms, and the home office. Roller shades are very complementary in rooms that have multiple windows. Modern sun rooms, living rooms, and bedrooms would benefit greatly from this type of window treatment. They block out harmful UV rays and help minimize glare. Sheer shades are great in the kitchen or media room. The near transparent shade allows you to see outside, even when the blinds are closed. Not exactly cheap either, they cost between 0.00 and 5.00 per unit. Pleated blinds are nice for the price. The cost is between .00 and .00 per set. It'll make your house more energy efficient and provide a nice upgrade to you current window treatments. On the exterior of your home, new shutters are a great way to spruce up your home's curb appeal. Add some window dressing with flower boxes and you've created a pleasing exterior impression. Window bars might be the polar opposite of shutters and flower boxes but you can't argue about their effectiveness. Just the site of bars on windows is enough to deter most criminal minds. Awnings around the windows are generally made of all-weather canvas. They protect the window from direct sunlight and heavy rain. These awnings also make your home or business more energy efficient by blocking a fair amount of sunlight from entering.
